UPDATE - Boat License Saga

Beitrag von neil richardson »

Hi All,

Okay, for those following my boat and radio license saga, the latest is as follows:

"Dear Mr. Richardson

your informations are correct: in general, on German inland and coastal waters the skipper of a motorized pleasure craft (more than 5 horse power) - the flag doesn't matter - needs a German License (Sportbootführerschein-Binnen or Sportbootführerschein-See). Only non-residents who spend less than a year in Germany do not need a German
license, if their state of residence does not require comparable certificates of competence. But to pass the German exam for the above mentioned licenses it is not necessary to go on a course or to join a sailing shool; especially if someone has your level of experience. You can directly take the examination. You´ll find all information about the examination under http://www.elwis.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, Freizeitschifffahrt, Führerscheininformationen. Please note that just the skipper needs a license.

With regard to your request of acceptance of your Marine Radio Operators Certificate we will ask our competent Ministry of Transport. As soon as we´ll get an answer, we´ll inform you.

Kind regards

DEUTSCHER SEGLER-VERBAND/GERMAN SAILING ASSOCIATION
Führerscheine, Segelschulen und Ausbildung

Dr. Germar Brockmeyer"

So,,, advice anyone on the elwis exam?? and what i should sit for???

Hi Neil, if you want to make your german licence it has to be "Sportbootführerschein See".

In our fishing Forum they are working on a course this winter. Maybe you can join in there just for the examinations.

Additionally I think some theory will be helpful, esp. cause everything will be in german. ;)

Just have a look.

Meine freunde

Ich habe gute Nachrichten endlich, lesen Sie bitte unten. i müssen nun die deutschen Radio-Unterschiede Forschung:

"Dear Mr. Richardson,

regarding your last e-Mail Dr. Brockmeyer was asking me to answer your questions.

First of all there is no answer upon our request by the Ministry of Transport until now. As soon as we'll get an answer we'll inform you.
Sorry for having no better news yet.

But in addition I got some basic information for you:

FEDERAL GERMAN BOAT LICENCES
Due to the different Traffic Regulations in coastal and inland waters we got two different basic-licences in Germany:
"Sportbootführerschein Binnen" for inland waters and "Sportbootführerschein See" for coastal waters.
If you want to sail the baltic you need the coastal one.

By the side of the international colregs there are some local regulations to be questioned as national traffic regulations and nature preserve items.

This is the link to the official questions and answers (also as pdf-download):

http://www.elwis.de/Freizeitschifffahrt ... index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As you can see there the system gonna change to multiple choice in may next year.

Trial examinations are on the market. Just check amazon or other stores for it.

We have to exam in german language. Anyhow we offer an oral examination to all non-native speakers. So wording shouldn't be a problem at all if you speak a bit German.

There is a boat handling exam as well. It consists of mooring/unmooring, person-over-board, 6 different knots (the common sailor's knots), steering by compass and taking an bearing by compass.
This shouldn't be a problem at all for someone with your level of experience.

FEDERAL GERMAN RADIO LICENCES
By the way: holders of a british RYA-Radio Licence (SRC) have to do an "endorsement exam" (Anpassungsprüfung) to reach the german radio licence (SRC). This includes only the additional german regulations to the international ones. Short - cheap - nice. Maybe this gonna be the answer by the ministry...

To check out what it's all about here is the link to all questions and answers for the endorsement:

http://www.elwis.de/Freizeitschifffahrt ... ng-SRC.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Finally the Baltic Sea will be worth all the paper work - for sure!

If you got any questions left, don't hesitate to ask me,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

with best regards "

Hallo Neil,
